Thursday 20th March 2014 - YMCA North Tyneside Receive £500 Donation

Unicom has recently re-launched its Community Support Scheme in Newcastle and after a great response, receiving many applications, has picked the second charity to award the funding to, YMCA North Tyneside.

YMCA North Tyneside supports people of all ages with a vision to transform communities so that all people feel they belong, contribute and thrive. They provide a wide variety of recreational and social activities for people of all ages, based at North Shields or with partners throughout North Tyneside. As well as programmes which promote our young leaders, such as the Young Health Champions who give advice to their peers on wellbeing and healthy lifestyles.

They have a strong commitment to young people, providing programmes which help them to reach their full potential.  This may mean engaging with young people on the streets, encouraging young carers, educating teenagers in the latest music discovery at the YStudio or through art letting children discover what children were up to in the First World War.

The funding donated by Unicom will provide kitchen equipment for 15 flats, currently being built as part of a renovation project. YMCA North Tyneside are converting part of their premises into fully furnished, supported accommodation for vulnerable 18 – 25 year olds. Once the project is complete the new flats will provide over 130 young people a year, a safe, comfortable place to live.

On being awarded the funding Colin Raistrick, who applied for the funding on behalf of YMCA North Tyneside, said “It’s great news! We have already started to work on the building, so, things are really underway. I’m so pleased we have been awarded, it will be a great contribution to the project as a whole.”
