Friday 13th December 2013 - Christmas Comes Early for Three Sheffield Charities

Christmas has arrived early for three Sheffield based community charities as they are each awarded £500 worth of much needed funding from small business telecoms and utilities provider, Unicom.

Unicom has awarded the funding through its Community Support Scheme, which grants local community groups and charities up to £500 to support projects that aim to improve the quality of life for local residents.

After successfully re-launching the scheme in Sheffield Unicom has awarded three charities the full £500 worth of funding to support a variety of community projects.

Park Community Action was the first charity to receive the funding. It provides support for the multi-ethnic residents in the community engaging them in positive activities. The funding will be used to run a ‘Cooking on a Budget’ course in early January, giving parents the skills and knowledge to cook healthy nutritious meals for their families.

The second charity to receive the grant was LOCAL. LOCAL provides a variety of courses to help residents of a social housing estate get back into long term employment. The funding received will turn the centres basic IT skills course into a recognised accreditation giving residents an extra qualification to add to their CV.

Youth Association South Yorkshire (YASY) was the third group to receive funding. YASY provides support for youths aged 14 -19 years old that are no longer in full time education. The funding will buy resources for its Wybourn Junior Youth Club, which provides kids living in the area of high deprivation activities, support and opportunities for social development.

On awarding the funding CEO Chris Earle said “Operating across 12 offices nationwide it’s important to invest in the communities that surround our regional offices. Re-launching the scheme one office location at a time ensures we have a maximum impact on each area. We have had a great response to the scheme in Sheffield and I am pleased to award the funding to all three worthy charities. Each project will have a long lasting impact on the residents in the communities they serve.”
