Over the last few weeks Unicom has hosted a series of internal events to raise money for Children in Need including a Bush Tucker Trial in the style of I’m a celebrity get me out of here.
Kicking off the charity drive the company held a Great Unicom Bake Off, giving Unicom’s finest bakers the chance to go head to head for the crown of Unicom’s Champion Baker. Staff paid to taste the cakes on offer and then cast their vote. The winner was Angela Thomas who baked not one but three kinds of cake including a Lemon Meringue cupcake. Delicious!
This was followed by a number of other activities including a ‘who’s nose’ quiz, where staff had to guess who’s nose belonged to who, a FIFA tournament, a retro quiz and a raffle, with great prizes donated by local businesses. We also hosted a World Food Day were staff got to sample culinary delights from around the world, all for a small donation.
The various events built up to the big day itself, Friday 14th November, where not only did staff dress up as children’s characters for a donation of £1 but also got to watch in horror as Alex Heslip (Sales Director) and Ben Simpson (Customer Service Advisor) battled it out in Unicom’s very own Bush Tucker trial. Delicacies the pair had to eat included sheep’s eyeballs, pigs ears, fish eyes, a cockroach yogurt, pigs kidneys and liver, all washed down with a boiled fish shake.
After such a fantastic week of fundraising at work Unicom didn’t stop there but went on to host its very own fundraising evening at the Wythenshawe Cricket Club. Employees, family and friends were all welcome and were treated to a bar, DJ and buffet, all for just £6 – all money raised was donated to the charity, of course!
In total, employees at Unicom raised £1757.83 and with the company matching every penny raised the grand total donated to Children in Need was £3515.66.
A great time was had by all; let’s see if we can beat the total raised in 2015!
